Seasons of the Sunfish

I’d like you to consider three questions: What is the first fish most of us catch on a fly? What is the most widely distributed and plentiful fish to catch on a fly? What fish is the most fun to catch on a fly? If your answer to any of these questions is bluegill, I agree with you 100 percent. Read more…

I’m addicted to bluegill fishing and believe returning the biggest gills to the water to breed again. Catch n release of the big breeders will help size structure overall because the older sunnies are prone to produce offspring that will grow larger. To me it’s about genetics.

    Your opinion?

See you two at the Fly Expo. at Hamline University this weekend.

      Hi Bill,
We return almost all our sunfish and especially the big ones. Having said that, there are some waters that have a great abundance of bluegill and other sunnies and judiciously keeping a few should not harm the fishery. Unfortunately, we all-to-often see folks keeping wash-tubs full of sunfish … and then later, they wonder where all the fish have gone. We must be wise if we are to care for our waters, the fish and the future of the resources.

      Thanks for your comment!
