Description

September Hopper Wind by Dave Whitlock

“For fly fishers, one of the best dry-fly fishing experiences occurs each September on afternoons when early autumn winds blow across trout streams. These winds dislodge fat, mature grasshoppers that concentrate on the lush stream-side meadow grasses and deliver them to big, wild, hopper-eating, mature trout. Probably most delighted by this scenario are prime, brown trout that are, at this time of year, fully clad in their most vibrant pallet of pre-spawn fall colors.

I was moved to not only paint this eagerly awaited time for trout and fly fisher but to also include the entire episode of land, water, plants, flowers, aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates and the reaction of wind and current action on such a bank-side drama.  So be sure to look past the wild, male brown trout and into the niches and crannies to discover the many less obvious life forms co-existing at the junction of shoreline and stream.”
